発表概要： For nearly 150 years, prison chaplains have played an important role in Japanese prisons. This talk situates Japanese prison religion in the context of global prison history and chaplaincy studies by uncovering the political dimensions of religious labor in the correctional system. Why do Japanese prisons rely on chaplains? What do they do? What do contemporary chaplains think of their role? How does this history shed light on religion state relations in Japan? 日本語要旨： 明治時代以来、教誨師が刑務所で活動してきている。世界の刑務所史とチャプレン活動の国際的な普及を念頭に置き、教誨の政治史を探り、日本の刑務所における宗教の役割を検討する。なぜ塀の中で宗教を教えるのか？教誨師の仕事とは何か？現役の教誨師がその仕事についてどう思っているのか？そして、教誨活動が宗教と国家の関係をどう反映しているのか？
