Abstract:This presentation examines some of Japan’s socioeconomic and cultural changes from micro-level and macro-level perspectives to shed light on the ways that immigration and demographic change are impacting interpersonal relations and senses of identity in Japan today. Drawing from ethnographic data gathered in Japan between 2013-2017, this presentation explains some of the more nuanced ways Japan is changing due to internal and external pressures.
