Abstract: Research interest in Japanese civic activism that called for solidarity with Asia in the post-war era has been increasing in recent years. The Japan-Korea Solidarity Movement of the 1970s and 80s formed among Korean residents in Japan (Zainichi) and progressive Japanese intellectuals, Christians, and activists to demonstrate support for South Korea’s democratization movement. This movement can be perceived as one of Japan’s “Asia Solidarity Movements” in the post-Vietnam War period (Michiba 2011). This presentation will focus on the Japan-Korea Solidarity Movement, particularly examining the formation, activities, and political implications of the transnational communicative networks that were actively operating behind the scenes of the movement.
