Report of Todai Chicago Faculty and graduate workshop

The first Interdisciplinary Faculty Workshop "Frontier Science and Social Ethics," and the third Graduate Workshop in Japanese Studies, both jointly hosted by the University of Chicago and the University of Tokyo, were held on October 17 and 18, respectively.
On the 17th, 6 faculty presenters gave presentations at the workshop around the theme of “frontier science and social ethics.” Issues of experimentation of new drugs, prenatal testing, and nuclear science ethics were raised and discussed. About 30 people participated in the workshop. On the 18th 10 graduate students gave presentations on a range of topics in Japanese studies. It was the third time that the University of Tokyo held graduate student workshop with the University of Chicago, and like previous two workshops, each presenter presented their work and engaged in a lively exchange of ideas and discussions among themselves and with the audience. Topics presented include "Disaster and its Remembering," "Before and After Xuan-Zang," "Imaging, imagination and ideology," "transcendence through the philosophy and religion", "transformation by the sound and the words". Roughly 25 people joined the workshop in the panel and general discussion.
